Derrick C. Brown is a comedian, poet and storyteller.
He is the winner of the 2013 Texas Book of The Year award for Poetry. He is a former Paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne and is the president of one of what Forbes and Filter Magazine call “…one of the best independent poetry presses in the country”, Write Bloody Publishing, which has launched over 112 books of poetry.
He is the author of five books of poetry and three children’s books. The New York Times calls his work, “…a rekindling of faith in the weird, hilarious, shocking, beautiful power of words.” He has worked with artists such as actress/poet Amber Tamblyn, the band Cold War Kids, comedian David Cross, painter Blaine Fontana, and countless talented and amazing poets, but the best yet…he is an artist partner with us, Artificer Wood Works!!
To say that this artist spotlight is well deserved is an understatement! Derrick’s accomplishments, both personal and professional, are truly to be admired and maybe a bit envied ;) So we were curious as to what goes on in that noggin of his and put our investigative reporting to work.
Stacie (S): Where did your passion for writing begin?
Derrick (D): In a foxhole as a paratrooper
S: That sounds cozy!
---------------------------
S: Where do you draw your inspiration?
D: Music and Sorrow
S: We can totally relate. However, substitute Sorrow for Wood.
---------------------------
S: If this writing thing doesn’t pan out, would you reprise your past careers of a weatherman or gondolier?
D: I miss gondoliering very much. I can’t wait to do it again.
---------------------------
S: Do you have a favorite quote?
D: “Whoever loves you, loves you regardless.” – Thomas Lux
S: Simply lovely…
---------------------------
S: So now that we’ve got the serious questions out of the way, where would you go if you had a time machine?
D: To a Delorean factory
S: Nice, you’re going to need 1.21 gigawatts!
---------------------------
S: How many times a week would you say that you hurt yourself trying to dance in the shower?
D: I don’t. Someone should learn the safety dance.
---------------------------
S: You’ve toured all over the world - sounds amazing!! Can you tell us about your experience with the Black Keys (i.e. what they like to eat, how do they smell, their personal cell numbers, anything, absolutely anything!!)?
D: I did some shows with Richard Swift of The Black Keys. He is the Keys in The Black Keys. He also recorded my album Black Urchin!
---------------------------
S: And the question that is on everyone’s minds, if you were an ice cream, what flavor would you be?
D: I’d be Pepto Bismarck.
S: Sounds a little nauseating and chalky, but we’re sure you’d feel good afterwards ;)
