BioChar for Beer

BioChar for Beer

Collage: BioChar

Recently, we were contacted by a friend Jesse Johnson, owner of Hoppiness Farms. He was interested in using our scrap wood to start making some BioChar. Our first question was, “What is BioChar?”

From Wikipedia: Biochar is a name for charcoal when it is used for particular purposes, especially as a soil amendment. Biochar is under investigation as an approach to carbon sequestration to produce negative carbon dioxide emissions. Biochar thus has the potential to help mitigate climate change, increase soil fertility of acidic soils (low pH soils), increase agricultural productivity, and provide protection against some foliar and soil-borne diseases. Furthermore, biochar reduces pressure on forests. Biochar is a stable solid, rich in carbon and can endure in soil for thousands of years.

We are so excited to discover that the little scraps of wood from our wood shop can not only be repurposed, but can play a crucial role in a process that is a carbon negative and a big positive for the environment. Not to mention, it helps grow healthy hops that will end up in our beer!
